Title:  Biomedical application of magnetic nanoparticles.

Abstract

The rapid development of nanotechnology is expected to have a dramatic impact on medicine. Recent data indicate that nontraditional antimicrobial agents have great promise in the treatment of infectious disease. Specifically, certain classes of nanomaterials, initially proposed as drug carriers in the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents, have been investigated in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Metallic nanoparticles such as silver, gold, selenium, and ferrum are characterized by inherent antimicrobial properties. The bactericidal properties of different nanostructures include: pure metal (Au, Ag, Fe), alloys (CdFe, FePt), oxides (Fe3O4, SeO) as well as core-shell structures are reported as effective agents that restrict the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Ceragenins, synthetic mimics of endogenous antibacterial peptides, are promising candidate antimicrobial agents. However, in some settings their strong bactericidal or fungicidial activity is associated with toxicity towards host cells. To modulate ceragenin CSA-13 antibacterial activity and biocompatibility, CSA-13-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-CSA-13) were synthesized. Different techniques were used to characterize MNP-CSA-13 physicochemical properties. Antimicrobial action and anticancer activity were assessed using a different methods. Our results demonstrate that CSA-13 retains antimicrobial activity when immobilized on a MNPs while biocompatibility increases when CSA-13 is covalently attached to the nanoparticle.

Keywords: nanotechnology, antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, anticancer, ceragenins, magnetic nanoparticles.
