Investigations were carried out in the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Nuclear Research Organization (CERN) on further development of scientific and technical cooperation in the field of high energy physics (9 November 2004) and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Protocol P120 of the Cooperation Agreement on the Participation of the Republic of Lithuania in the CERN Science Program (26 September 2014). Since 2008 CERN researchers are working intensively on developing technology for amorphous carbon deposition by means of direct-current magnetron sputtering and hollow cathode sputtering. Scientists of the KTU Materials Science Institute complemented the experience of the CERN group with their extensive work on the deposition of various amorphous carbon films. The studies used plasma-activated chemical vapor deposition technology, ion-beam synthesis and high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS).

Project results:
The aim of this work was to create new materials with low coefficient of secondary electron emission using different allotropes of carbon and carbon based nanocomposites.
In order to achieve the set goal, the following tasks were performed:
1) High-reactive high-power pulsed magnetron-sputtering was applied to deposit hydrogenated amorphous carbon coatings and the influence of their composition and structure on the secondary emission coefficient was studied.
2) The influence of the structure and composition of films of amorphous carbon and nanocrystalline graphite films produced by thermal treatment of the diamond-type carbon on the secondary emission factor of electrons was studied.
3) Amorphous carbon and nanocrystalline graphite coatings deposited by high power pulsed magnetron sputtering of the graphite target and the influence of their structure and composition on the secondary electron emission coefficient were studied.
Period of project implementation: 2017-01-01 - 2017-12-31
