MMI PhD student in International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

Important | 2019-06-06

On May 26-31, KTU MMI 4th year PhD student Aušrinė Jurkevičiūtė has participated in 8th International Conference on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry, which was held in Barcelona, Spain. Conference topics involved research related to various aspects of spectroscopic ellipsometry: from determination of optical constants of various materials to the development of new equipment and modelling techniques. The conference was sponsored by many manufacturers of spectroscopic ellipsometers.

International conference on spectroscopic ellipsometry is held every three years at a different country and attracts specialists of this field from all over the world. This year the conference was attended by 282 scientists, of whom 1/3 were the students. The conference started with a tutorial session and homage to Manuel Cardona – Spanish-born spectroscopic ellipsometry researcher. The rest of the conference was dedicated to technical sessions with oral presentations and two poster sessions. Among keynote speakers, there were well-known spectroscopic ellipsometry specialists, some of whom had written handbooks about this measurement technique: Rasheed M. A. Azzam, Hiroyuki Fujiwara, Maria Losurdo, David E. Aspnes, Karsten Hinrichs, etc.

A. Jurkevičiūtė presented the poster entitled „Spectroscopic ellipsometry mapping of femtosecond laser irradiated diamond-like carbon:metal nanocomposite thin films“. The presentation attracted attention from other scientists and the contact information was exchanged with a possibility for future collaboration in the fields of nanocomposites and carbon materials.

On the last day of the conference, Paul Drude Award was given for young researchers of exceptional contributions to the development and application of spectroscopic ellipsometry. The winners were Eva Bittrich (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research, Germany) and Chris Sturm (University of Leipzig, Germany). Next conference on spectroscopic ellipsometry will be held in 2022, at Beijing, China.
