Important | 2026-10-01

On 9 September 2026, the Institute of Materials Science welcomed Prof. Mário F. S. Ferreira from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), who delivered a seminar entitled “Nonlinear Phenomena in Specialty Optical Fibers: Physics and Applications”.

During the seminar, Prof. Ferreira presented an overview of specialty optical fibers and their applications, highlighting recent advances in highly nonlinear optical fibers, nanowires, and microstructured optical fibers. Particular attention was devoted to dispersive and nonlinear optical phenomena and their significance for modern optical communications, signal processing, amplification, sensing technologies, and photonic devices.

The speaker also discussed how the development of new optical fiber materials and structures has enabled significant miniaturization of photonic systems and opened new opportunities for all-optical technologies. The presentation attracted researchers, doctoral students, and members of the academic community interested in photonics, optical materials, and advanced communication technologies.

Prof. Mário F. S. Ferreira is a Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Aveiro and a recognized expert in optics and photonics. His research spans optical fiber communications, nonlinear fiber optics, optical sensors, fiber lasers, and photonic technologies. He has authored hundreds of scientific publications and numerous books in the field and is a Fellow of both OPTICA and SPIE.

We thank Prof. Ferreira for sharing his expertise and valuable insights with the KTU research community.
